Lieutenant Colonel Gary F. Smith is Chief, Army Retirement
Services, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, the
Pentagon, Washington, DC.
Colonel Smith(R) retired as the Director, Army Family
Support Directorate, US Army Community and Family Support Center,
Alexandria, Virginia, October, 1991, after serving more than 23 years
of active commissioned service.
Colonel Smith(R) began his military career serving as a
Company Commander, 523d Signal Battalion, Vicenza, Italy. He later
served with the 23d Infantry Division, Republic of Vietnam. Other
duty assignments include Test and Evaluation Command, Aberdeen
Proving Grounds, Maryland; US Disciplinary Barracks, Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas; Military District of Washington, Washington,
DC; Allied Forces Central Europe Reserve Corps, Maastricht,
Netherlands; and Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Alexandria,
Virginia.
Colonel
Smith(R) received a BA Degree in Political Science
from Creighton University and a MS degree in Systems Management
from the University of Southern California. Military schools attended
include the United States Army Command and General Staff College,
Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, Adjutant General
Officers Advanced Course, Signal Officer Basic Course, and Airborne.
He has received the Soldier's Medal; Bronze Star, 1st Oak Leaf
Cluster; Legion of Merit; Meritorious Service Medal, 3d Oak Leaf
Cluster; Army Commendation Medal, 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Army
General Staff Identification Badge; and Parachute Badge.
