Meaning and Usage of Taps

Taps is probably the most universally recognized bugle call because of its place in military funerals, expressing a dignified and deeply felt "Hail and Farewell" in a way that words could not.  While the solemnity of this call is clearly established, it can still be used at the end of the day in its original Civil War context to signal "Lights Out" and needn't be considered morbid or inappropriate as such.  Its serene tone-poem quality is also well-suited to a call that says, "Good night; Peaceful sleep....".
